The best definition of music I could find is this: “Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and dynamics.” But more than that, it feeds the soul.
Just as everyone has a personal taste in books and fashion, each person has his or her favorite music band or music genres. I read it somewhere that music genres are like a big tree that links all music together. There are quite a number of kinds of music and it is categorized conventionally to identify pieces belonging to a certain shared tradition or set of conventions. It is more aptly described as a variety of facets of music, its style, instrumentation and treatment of those instruments, its form and function, its means of transmission and dissemination, the period which the composition was written, and the location of its geographical origins. Sometimes these factors crosses with the cultural or ethnic background of the composer.
One of the biggest questions in the music world is what’s the best genre of music? Everyone has their own taste and “feels”, and people tend to listen to different kinds of music according to which suits the mood.
If we are to base our best music genre list on the latest Grammy Awards, then we can say that this year’s best is Ballad, won by Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me” for Best Single.
Most Listened To
Spotify, a digital music service, has created a live ‘musical map of the world’, analysing nearly 20 billion tracks to show localized listening trends for over 1000 cities. Updated bi-weekly hereon, the map is based on music that is “distinctive” to each area – songs that are listened to frequently in specific cities that are not frequently listened to in others. The most interesting finding is that hip-hop is the world’s top genre, showing up on playlists more than all others, regardless of geography or language.
Twitter data reveals what styles of music are most-tweeted about in different countries and the most tweeted genres are Pop and Ballad. Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” (Pop) topped the list.
Most Loyal Fans
Spotify wanted to find out which Music Genres have the most loyal fans. They first identified the “core” artists that are most central to each genre, starting with the big ones, on a global level. Then they did the same thing with local genres in various countries around the world. To create a measure of genre loyalty, they divided the number of streams each core artist had by their number of listeners. All of the charts are normalized against the genre with the most loyal fans. The result: Metal fans are the world’s most loyal listeners.
This only goes to say that the title for the top music genre this year is pretty arguable. And listeners does not have a collective or single inclination towards a single preference or convention.
